"How are you feeling?"
Yanessa offered me a reassuring smile as she finished fastening the silver bands around my wrists. She'd said something about how the bracelets would help to stabilize my resonance, but the cold metal hoops felt entirely too much like manacles for comfort. I shivered as a memory of the Typhon's dark, cramped hold pitching and heaving in the grip of a storm during the long crossing to Farshore flashed through my mind.
"Honestly? I'd rather swallow crushed glass than do this again."
She laughed, and the music of her voice soothed my ragged nerves like cool water washing over a hot stone as she gave my shoulder a comforting squeeze.
"Take heart. The young Tellvarian has offered has introduced a number of refinements to his spell since our first attempt."
She glanced over to where Alleron stood conferring with Nerian and Belanor, then shook her head and smiled like a proud parent watching their child play in the sunshine.
"What he has achieved is really quite remarkable. When he left the city I feared his mother's legacy had been lost with him, but it seemed he has benefited greatly from his adventures abroad."
"He never talks about his mother," I said, keeping my voice low as I followed her gaze toward my elven friend. "I don't even know her name."
"Shiara was..." Yanessa caught herself with a frown, then swallowed hard. "I suppose I should say "is", shouldn't I? Shiara is a force of nature. Her presence did much to ensure unity in our council. Your Alleron adored her. I fear the poor boy has taken her absence rather hard."
"Wait, she's missing?" I asked in confusion.
"What? Oh, goodness no, we know right where she is. Well, where her body is, at any rate. I'm afraid her mind has traveled well beyond our reach. She lost herself in one of her divinations, you see. All that remains of the woman now is a wasted body that I've gone to great lengths to sustain despite the fact there is little hope she will ever return to it."
Yanessa sounded like an exasperated medicus saddled with the unpleasant task of convincing the family of a departed soul of their new and unhappy reality. Which I suppose she was, in a way.
"Well thanks for you help," I said as she turned back to me with a weary sigh. "With Alleron's mother, and with the ritual too, for that matter."
"You're quite welcome, child," the elven wizard replied with a graceful tilt of her head.
The Amethyst Magus turned and walked to her inscribed circle in the Arcani's alteriam as Alleron walked towards me.
"Are you ready?"
By now I knew the difference between Alleron's genuine smile and the fake one he wore when he was worried and trying hard not to show it, but I smiled back at him anyway. He was still the only one with any kind of plan to keep me out of an early grave, and I didn't see how shaking his confidence any further was going to improve my odds of surviving his attempted cure.
